WEC Treks

1 ON ONE Individual Placements from 3 -6 months for those with a servant heart .
The distinctive features of this program are found in the emphasis on language and cultural study, plus the mentoring atmosphere of working one on one with missionaries. We have a FLEXIBLE program. The participant chooses where they want to go, what they want to do and how long they want to stay. WEC Trek then matches individuals with missionaries on the field of choice doing that kind of work and sets up a program for the participant. Individual job descriptions are put together as a placement is made. The goal is to set up a situation so that the serious seeker can experience mission life in person and seek whether God is leading towards longer term missionary service or missions involvement at home.

Short-term Workers

Many openings exist for those who feel called for a short period of time - usually between one and two years. People with practical skills, such as nurses, teachers, carpenters, mechanics, can often make a valuable contribution. They may work on a project or provide cover when a career missionary goes on home leave. They should be able to slot into a new cultural situation fairly quickly, without needing a lot of cultural adaptation.

Apprenticeship Scheme

This is a fairly new scheme which allows new workers to go straight to the country to which God has called them. During the three-year apprenticeship they work alongside experienced missionaries while having part-time Bible training, language study and cultural adaptation. At the end of the three years they spend one year at Bible College, followed by our candidates orientation course before becoming established long term workers. This scheme is open to 19 to 26 year olds.

Associate Workers

Some people feel called by God to a country, region or people, but for various reasons can't give all of their time to the work. If they anticipate giving a significant portion of their time to WEC International we would be happy to accommodate them. Normally they would be committed to spending a longer period of time in the country of their choice than a short term worker. Many associate workers are involved in ministries in their own countries.

Long Term Workers

These are people who know the Lord has called them to serve on a long-term basis. WEC has over 700 openings for traditional missionaries, including church planters, translators, evangelists, youth workers, Bible teachers, etc. Some long term workers may be called to "Creative Access Nations" (CAN), where normal activity is difficult. We CAN make "unreachable" people reachable!

Requirements for long-term workers
Long term workers should:

love the Lord Jesus Christ
believe the Bible
show maturity of character
be adequately trained
have a desire to share Jesus with others
want to reach unreached peoples
be flexible enough to adapt to others
trust God in every situation

Bible College
Normally, anyone who is called to do the work of a missionary on a long term basis is required to complete a two year Bible course at an evangelical Bible College. (Other forms of training and experience will normally be taken into account.) WEC has four colleges located in Brazil, Australia, New Zealand and The Netherlands. These offer full time programmes lasting two or three years. For those with some Bible training already, there is also the option of the Gateway Cross Cultural Training Center in Canada which gives a special one year programme in missions.

Selection Procedure
Each applicant wishing to join WEC is carefully screened by asking them to answer questions regarding their doctrinal position, medical fitness and general attitude. We expect applicants to have already demonstrated a desire to serve God in their local churches. Contact is made with the applicant's home church as soon as formal enquiry is made. Once it is clear that the church's leadership is sympathetic and supportive, we involve them in the whole selection process.

Candidates Orientation (CO)
Once a person has been accepted as a candidate, they spend eight weeks on a candidates programme, being orientated about their service with WEC International and prepared for their life overseas. It is a time of integration into the WEC "family" as the candidates and the mission come to know each other. Candidates will make a study of the country they are going to and are involved in the life of the sending base, doing practical work and getting to know how WEC operates. During this period candidates are responsible to the Candidates Director who keeps the church that is sending them informed of progress
